Hariphunchai had gone through six centuries with wealth; hence this attracted King Mangrai, the ruler of “Hiran Nakorn Ngen Yang” in Chiang Rai. In 1281, he invaded and burned Hariphunchai to the ground by his powerful army. King Yeeba, the last king of Hariphunchai, escaped to Khelangnakorn where his son, King berg, ruted at that moment. Later on, he moved to Nan and eventually to Sukhothai.
King Mangrai realized that Hariphunchai was too small and full of temples, so he was unable to extend the city. As a result, he moved the capital to “Wiang Cha Ware” or “Wiang Jae Jiang Kum.” (At present, the site is still unknown. Many assume that it should be in the area of Sob Ping Ling Ha near Wat Sri Boon Yun.) He later eastablished “Wiang Kumkam” and Nopburi Sri Nakornping Chiang Mai” respectively. In 1296, Chiang Mai was established as the center of Lanna.
Later, around 15 kings of Mangrai dynasty ruled Lanna. Until 1558, King Burengnong of Myanmar invaded the region. At that time, Lamphun was part of Chiang Mai so it was occupied by Myanmar for mor than 200 Years
