Amphoe Muang. Legend has it, that Queen Chamthewi, the first ruler of Hariphunchai, the Hariphunchai, the former name of Lamphun, ordered the temple built in 670, after she had ruled for eight years. However, some historians believe that King Amikarai of Hariphunchai built this temple in the 17th century of the Buddhist calendar (around 700 years ago). Officially named Wat Aranyikaram, the temple houses a chedi with four Buddha images in standing posture facing the four diredtions. The arched roof is topped with round- and bell- shaped ornamental finial - an architecture similar to the of Bagan in Burma and Wat Pak Sak in Chiang Rai.
อำเภอเมือง เป็นวัดเก่าแก่คู่บ้านคู่เมืองนครหริภุญชัย หรือ เมืองลำพูนมาตั้งแต่สมัยพระนางจามเทวี ปฐมกษัตริย์แห่งนครหริภุญชัยหลังจากที่พระนางได้รับเชิญจากพระฤาษีวาสุเทพผู้ก่อตั้งเมือง ขึ้นมาครองเมืองได้ 8 ปี จึงได้สร้างวัดนี้ขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 1213 เพื่อให้เป็นที่จำพรรษาของพระสังฆเถระที่ติดตามมาจากเมืองละโว้มีชื่อว่า วัดอรัญญิการาม หรือวัดพระยืนในปัจจุบัน บางแห่งก็ว่าพระเจ้าอัมมิกราชกษัตริย์หริภุญชัยเป็นผู้สร้างขึ้นเมื่อราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 17 สิ่งที่สำคัญภายในวัดก็คือ พระเจดีย์ทรงมณฑป มีพระพุทธรูปยืนทั้งสี่ทิศ เครื่องบนประกอบด้วยเจดีย์ห้ายอด โดยมีเจดีย์ทรงระฆัง และเจดีย์ทรงกลมขนาดเล็กเป็นประธาน คล้ายคลึงกับอานันทเจดีย์ที่เมืองพุกาม และเจดีย์วัดป่าสัก จังหวัดเชียงราย
