Woodcarving of Lamphun

Woodcarving of Lamphun can be observed at a library of sacred writings, monastery, uposatha hall, and a monk’s logging. Also, on the roof top are curved finials of a gable, slopping edges of a gable, hang hong finials, pediment, roof supporter, pillar top which Lanna craftsmen were skillful in the art of deep carving. They often made Lai Mo Dok or Mo Puranakata (Thai traditional painting) which focused on large petals referring to the abundanceof Lanna society. Lai Bai Phak Kud and Lai Bua Jongkol (Thai Traditional paintings) are from Hariphunchai period. Later, these paintings were developed to Lai Khrua Lanna as well as Lai Mek Tan and Lai Mek Lai whichportray the smoothness of Thai traditional paintings.
“Huen Ba Kao Jao Yong,” or an ancient house of Tai Lue-Tai Yong people, is another architecture that should be preserved. Its uniqueness is a pillar decorated with “Sa Ra Nai” located near the pediment. This can bemostly found at Ma Kok and Mae Reng sub-districts of Pa Sang district and also at Ton Phung sub-district. Wooden buildings such as rice barn and bathroom also have the same kind of architecture, and this reflects the way of life of Yong people in Lamphun 200 years agoLamphun since they are heritages left behind by craftsmen in the past and passed on to woodcarving villages in Mae Tha district. Besides handicrafts,Lamphun has a contemporary national artist, Inson Wongsam, and a national local-knowledge teacher, Sompol Lasakul.
